Head Coach Ben Jacobson

Head Coach Ben JacobsonUniversity of Northern Iowa head coach Ben Jacobson personifies class and dignity on and off the floor as the leader of the Panther men's basketball team. As the UNI men's basketball program's all-time wins leader, he boasts an overall record of 291-174 (.625 winning percentage) through 14 seasons. Jacobson has averaged 20.8 wins per season at UNI.

He has guided the Panthers to four NCAA Tournament appearances and four NCAA victories. Jacobson is a four-time MVC Coach of the Year and ranks fourth all-time in the MVC coaching victories. He also ranks fifth in the league record book for MVC-only wins with 153 triumphs. Jacobson is the only coach in the history of the Missouri Valley Conference to have recorded two wins over two different No. 1-ranked teams (Kansas, North Carolina).

Under Jacobson, UNI placed in the top half of the MVC during 11 seasons. Prior to him joining the staff in 2001, the Panthers had only finished in the upper half twice since joining the conference in 1991. At one point, UNI rolled off 16 consecutive top half finishes beginning in 2003.

Jacobson has guided the Panthers to postseason play in seven of his 14 seasons as head coach, including four trips to the NCAA Tournament (2009, 2010, 2015 and 2016). UNI reached the Sweet 16 in 2010 following wins over UNLV and No. 1-ranked Kansas. UNI competed in the 2012 National Invitational Tournament and scored a first-round road victory over Saint Joseph's. UNI also took part in the 2011 and 2013 CollegeInsider.com tournaments. UNI advanced to the semifinals of the 2013 CIT. The Panthers scored a 71-54 win over Wyoming in the 2015 NCAA Tournament to secure the fourth all-time tournament victory for the program. UNI produced its fifth NCAA Tournament win with a 75-72 triumph over Texas in the 2016 tourney.

Jacobson has nine players earn First Team All-MVC, eight earn second team, and eight earn third team or honorable mention in his tenure. He has also seen UNI honored with three of Larry Bird MVC Player of the Year honorees in Adam Koch (2010), Seth Tuttle (2015) and AJ Green (2020).

Jacobson has also seen 23 players earn Academic All-Conference honors for the Panthers in his time at UNI. Adam Koch (2010), Nate Buss (2015) and AJ Green (2020) each earned MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors for the Panthers. The Panthers have had many make immediate impacts during Jacobson's tenure with ten players earning a spot on either the MVC All-Newcomer or MVC All-Freshmen teams since the 2006-07 season. Seth Tuttle earned MVC Freshman of the Year honors in 2012 and AJ Green earned the honor in 2019.

Following the 2016-17 season, Jacobson was awarded a two-year contract extension that will run through March 31, 2027.

Associate Head Coach Kyle Green

Kyle Green is entering his 16th season as a member of the UNI Panther men's basketball coaching staff in 2020-21. He is in his third stint as an assistant coach after serving from 2001-2003 and 2006-2011. He was elevated to Associate Head Coach for the UNI men's basketball prior to the 2017-18 season. Green serves as the recruiting coordinator and works with the Panther post players.

In the 2011-2012 season, Green was the head coach at Wisconsin-Eau Claire - a Division III school in Eau Claire, Wis. In between his previous two terms as a Panther assistant, Green was an assistant coach at Marquette University in the 2003-2004 season and the head coach of Lewis University, a Division II school in Romeoville, Ill., in the 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 seasons.

Green started his coaching career in 1992 as player/coach of the Frederica (Denmark) Basketball Club. He was named Denmark Serie Coach of the Year after guiding Frederica to a 30-3 record and the Denmark Serie title. He then served as an assistant coach from 1993-1995 at his alma mater, Hamline University. He has also served as an assistant coach at Southwest Minnesota State (1995-1997), and Augustana (S.D.) College (1997-2000) and was head coach at Western State (Colo.) College during the 2000-2001 season.

A native of Minneapolis, Minn., Green received his bachelor’s degree in social studies/psychology from Hamline in 1992. He was a four-year letterwinner for Hamline, earning academic all-conference honors as both a junior and senior. Green earned his master’s degree in athletic administration from St. Thomas University in 1999.

He and his wife, Michele, are the parents of a son, A.J. (20), and a daughter, Emerson (17).

Assistant Coach PJ Hogan
 
Assistant Coach P.J. Hogan

P.J. Hogan is in his 17th year at the University of Northern Iowa, and his 15th as a full-time assistant coach for the men's basketball team. Hogan is responsible for coordinating player development, particularly with the Panthers’ perimeter players, and is heavily involved in recruiting.  He also is in charge of coordinating UNI’s opponent scouting as well as the team’s numerous summer camps.

Prior to coming to UNI, Hogan served as the top assistant coach at Southwest State University (known today as Southwest Minnesota State) for two years. At the Division II school, he helped lead them to an overall record of 38-18 and two second-place finishes in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.  The 2001-02 team won 21 games – the second-most wins in school history – and advanced to the conference tournament championship game. While at Southwest State, he was in charge of recruiting and player development.  In addition, he oversaw the team’s strength and conditioning program, and served as the team’s academic coordinator.

Before going to Southwest State, Hogan worked at North Dakota State University during the 2000-01 season as an assistant coach, as well as the 1999-2000 season at Wayne State College. Hogan was part of one of most successful seasons in school history, as the Wildcats went 26-6 and reached the NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen. 

A native of Dubuque, Iowa, Hogan was a four-year letter winner at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa. He graduated from Morningside in 1999 with a degree in sociology and was named to the North Central Conference’s honorable mention all-academic team. A high school graduate of Dubuque Hempstead, Hogan was a Class 4A first-team all-state performer. 

Hogan earned his master’s degree in leisure services from UNI in 2008.

Erik Crawford is in his eighth season as an assistant coach for the University of Northern Iowa men’s basketball team.

Crawford, a native of Oakdale, Minn., totaled 1,108 points as a collegiate basketball player. As a Panther from 2003-06, he helped lead UNI to three straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament (2004, 2005, 2006). The Panthers posted a mark of 65-31 during Crawford’s playing days. He was an honorable mention All-Missouri Valley Conference pick as a junior. He earned MVC All-Newcomer status in 2004 following a transfer from Bowling Green State University.

Crawford served as Creighton University’s director of basketball operations in 2010-11. Prior to his year at Creighton, Crawford spent the previous four seasons at Iowa State University. With the Cyclones, he served as a graduate manager (two years) and as an assistant director of basketball operations (two years). Crawford worked for head coach Greg McDermott at both Creighton and Iowa State.

Crawford earned his undergraduate degree in leisure youth and human services from UNI in May 2006. He also earned his master’s degree in Kinesiology from Iowa State in May 2011.

He and his wife, Nicole, have a daughter, Mya Marie, and son, Treyvin Randall.

Ike Hermer is in his second year as the Panthers director of basketball operations in 2020.

In this roll, Hermer will oversee the day to day operations of the men's basketball office including the teams operating budget, team travel, quality control, NCAA compliance, scheduling, and fundraising among other duties.

Hermer has spent the last five years at the University of Minnesota, the last three as the assistant director of player personnel. In that roll Hermer created scouting reports, scheduled recruiting visits, and directed the team's youth camps. Hermer served as the assistant director of operations as well as the team's academic advisor.

Hermer earned his Bachelor's Degree at the University of Minnesota where he majored in Marketing and Mass Communication in 2015 and earned his Master's Degree in Kinesiology in 2017.

Video Coordinator Seth Tuttle

Seth Tuttle is in his first year as the men's basketball Video Coordinator after rejoining the program during the 2018-19 season as a Graduate Manager.  Tuttle will film and breakdown practice and game film and assist the coaching staff with scouting reports. He will also assist in the creation of recruiting and highlight videos.

Tuttle enjoyed a four-year playing career for the Panthers from 2011-2015. He finished his career with UNI as the fourth all-time scorer (1,747 points) in team history. Tuttle is top-10 in men's basketball history at UNI for free throws made (508), free throws attempted (675), career field goal percentage (57.6%) and blocked shots (95). He also started in every game over his four-year career (136 games).

Following his collegiate career, Tuttle signed with the Miami Heat for the 2015 NBA Summer League. The former Panther then went on to play three seasons overseas in Germany and Belgium.
